Development Direction

The department regards research and teaching as its main goals: Taught programs shall consider both foundation of theory and practice. Apart from lesson teaching, all programs shall be supported with practical application, online operation and assignment discussion aided by teachers and teaching assistants. The department offers and plans cross-departmental integrated professional programs, such as 3C modules, biological information modules, etc., in hope that students of the department can be equipped with solid and diverse foundation of knowledge.

The department conducts commission projects from units such as National Science Council, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Council of Agriculture, County / City Government, and National Chung-Shan Institute of Science & Technology every year. Now, the department also establishes university and industry liaison system with various computer companies and telecommunication companies. Also, the department offers close technical support to small and medium enterprises in Sijhih, Nangang, Neihu, Keelung and Yilan District through the University’s Incubation Center. In the future, the department will establish relevant technology research center to integrate regional research and development resources, in hope to become key center of information technology in Northern Taiwan.

Program Design

Information foundation theory

Bachelor programs of the department are composed of the following four areas based on existing teacher resources and specialties: Hardware and embedded system area, Software area, Network multi-media area and Computer science area. As bachelor programs of the department value cultivation of students’ basic skills. Since 2014, the department requires students to complete at least 6 credits from each of the four areas, and at least 12 credits for one of the areas; Each module shall only belong to one area and shall not be counted as module of two or more areas. As such, students shall have studied modules of all four areas, and shall choose an area for further study according to personal interests.

Innovation capability

Program-specific practice can enhance link with industry and stimulate cultivation of innovation capabilities. Through a combination of industry liaison with university education, students may earn opportunities to put learnt knowledge into practice, thereby helping students become experienced talents of professional abilities. By pairing theories with practice, study performance can be enhanced through program-specific practice. Moreover, interaction of the University with enterprises can be strengthened so that students may best fulfill needs of the industry. In 2013, the department cooperated with SYSTEX Corporation, Wistron Corporation, Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. and QNAP Systems, Inc. Students were dispatched to the enterprises for long-term internships for early immersion into practice of the industry, to best develop students’ cooperation and innovation capabilities in future career development.

Practical training

To emphasize application of book-learnt knowledge, the department has scheduled various themed modules for students since second semester in Year 3 of Bachelor degree programs, in hope that students may further apply learnt knowledge into practice as basis for deciding whether oneself is suitable for further study or choice of career. Moreover, the department has revised and adjust certain programs according to learning condition of students in recent years. For example, since 2007, the department has changed themed modules for Bachelor degrees to compulsory modules, in hope to best fulfill need of students and enhance students’ practical abilities.

Humanism quality

Themed discussion modules aim to cultivate humanism quality. To deepen students’ professional practice and learning of design technique, the department invites experienced professionals of the industry and academics to the department every semester, to introduce students to current development and trends of information engineering, in hope to connect students’ learnt knowledge with social trends.

Teamwork cooperation

Themed modules can strengthen students’ teamwork abilities. As teacher resources become increasingly abundant in recent years, learning performance of themed modules can thus be best implemented. To train students’ problem-solving abilities, the department lists project researches as compulsory modules. In the form of group competitions, students’ teamwork abilities can be best strengthened; Students are also encouraged to actively participate in projects through competitions in project researches.

Professional ethics modules. To enhance students’ understanding in engineering ethics and patents, the department specially invites teachers of relevant specialties in engineering ethics and patents to conduct talks in the department.

Teacher lineup

The department holds 28 full-time teachers, 1 jointly appointed teacher, 2 chair professors, and plan to further recruit outstanding teachers in relevant areas of expertise in the short term to offer more diverse teaching services. Teachers of the department are graduates from renowned education institutes both inside and outside of the country, and possess rich practical and teaching experiences. They are young in average, passionate about teaching and interact well with students.
